According to the United Nations, sustainability is defined as, “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Many nations, organizations, companies, agencies, community projects, welfare societies are practicing sustainability in as possible as they can. Whether it be reducing wastes, reducing chemicals and carbons, promoting reuse of any materials, cutting off food wastes, recycling papers and so on, it is our joint responsibility to contribute towards a sustainable environment for a better future.

At Barahi, we are emphasizing on sustainability by conducting the following activities on every day to weekly to monthly basis:

• Reusing the materials:

  Such as metals, rods, plastics or fibers for in any possible ways here by repairing, maintaining, re-developing.

• Less usage of papers:

  For any official purposes, we have been practicing to avoid the paper usages unless it is urgent. To mitigate it, we have been using digital platforms instead. This way we have been able to reduce our administrative expenses.

• Discouraging plastics and wrappers:

  We encourage our students to bring packed foods from home in tiffin but we strongly discourage any junk foods and drinks packed in plastics and wrappers. A daily inspection is conducted at the school to discourage plastics and wrappers usage.

• Plantation practices:

  We practice planting trees and plants wherever possible inside and outside school premises so that we could contribute towards nature conservation.

• Others:

  Re-using the ID card holders, dumping the wastes in appropriate places to produce fertilizers for small-scale or household farming.

We are still trying to develop more sustainable efforts as we have many tons of goals to achieve. In future, we will be collaborating with agencies and organizations who support the sustainable development goals and practices at the local level.
